[Celestial map]. PARDIES (Ignace-Gaston). [Celestial map: Hydrus, Toucan, Indus, Chamaeleon, Phoenix...]. Paris, G[aspard] Duchange, [1693].1 copper-engraved map (49 x 49 cm. on sheet 50 x 71.3 cm.), hand-colored (restored). The last celestial map in the series of six by Ignace Gaston Pardies, this plate, centered on the Antarctic Circle, illustrates numerous constellations, including the Hydra, Toucan, Indian, Chameleon, Phoenix, Dorado, Eridan, Crane, Bee and Peacock. Inspired by Bayer's Uranometria, Pardies' maps combine mathematical precision and gnomonic projection, influenced by his exchanges with Newton and Leibniz. Published after his death, they were collected by Jean de Fontaney in Globi coelestis in tabulas planas (1674, 1693, 1700) and engraved by Guillaume Vallet. Second edition - as the engraved notice to the reader in the lower right-hand corner indicates - with added trajectories of comets "which have appeared since the year 1674". A fine, well-preserved copy with careful coloring.
