[PTOLÉMÉE (Claude) ; WALDSEEMULLER]. Sphera in Plano. [Strasbourg, Johann Schott, 1513]. 1 woodcut plate (62 x 43.5 cm.), hand-colored (restored at center fold and corners in margin). Rare map featuring a diagram of winds with their names. Taken from Ptolemy's 1513 edition. It depicts a complex network of lines and circles emanating from an eye symbolizing the eye of God. This representation reveals various celestial coordinates and markers, such as the ecliptic, equator and tropics. Surrounding the sphere are anthropomorphic representations of the winds, each bearing a classical name such as "Septentrio," "Aquilo," "Vulturnus," "Eurus," "Euroauster," "Auster," "Austroafricus," "Africus," "Favonius," "Corus," "Circius," and "Thrascias." These allegories of the wind are illustrated as heads blowing air, emerging from clouds. This map is accompanied by Latin texts on the page to the right of the celestial sphere and on the reverse.
