Fabrice HYBER (1961) [FRANCE] Compost, 2013 Mixed media (collage, tacks, varnish, charcoal) on canvas. Signed, dated and titled on back. 150 x 250 cm Born in 1961 in the Vendée region of France, Fabrice Hybert studied mathematics before attending the École des Beaux-Arts de Nantes (1980-1985). His first solo exhibition took place in 1986. In 1997, he represented France at the Venice Biennale. He lives and works in Paris, where he teaches at the École des Beaux-arts. Since the early 2000s, Fabrice Hyber's artistic concerns have turned to the consequences of global warming, as highlighted by the IPCC. The artist's roots, the land where he was born and his taste for the countryside explain his interest in the plant world, nature and ecology. By investing the field of art, he seeks to make visible not only what he feels and perceives about the ecological damage caused by the post-1968 consolidation of agricultural plots in the Vendée bocage, but also other ecological issues. In this work, Hybert invites us to re-evaluate our representation of death by schematizing the organic cycle of life and its stages. In so doing, the artist reminds us - not without humor and destabilizing force - that human beings are only one link in the ecological chain of living things, bringing us face to face with our responsibilities.
