The most important thing is the sound, not the colors." - Serge Poliakoff Serge Poliakoff, a Russian painter associated with the École de Paris and the abstract movements of the post-war period, seeks in his non-figurative compositions an art of balance between form and color. The mosaic of chromatic surfaces generates an optical vibration. The formal puzzle is sometimes angular, orthogonal or diagonal, and is surprisingly improbable and adventurous. Likewise, the arrangement of colors, here in two dominant shades of red and blue with white, sometimes resonates and sometimes dissolves without violence. A few modest roundings also introduce a local musicality that is nonetheless decisive for the composition as a whole.
