This work by Vlaminck reveals all the chromatic audacity and fiery talent of this self-taught artist. Marked by his Fauvist experience and his great admiration for Van Gogh, Vlaminck infuses this banal subject with emotional power and tragic lyricism. The painter's speed is astonishing: he hastily sweeps his canvas with broad strokes of white, black and brown, and even applies impasto straight from the tube in his haste. Vlaminck sometimes spent a long time memorizing landscapes he had seen before he was ready to paint them. They would then present themselves to his memory in the form of flashes, glimpsed during a fast-moving car ride. [...] Vlaminck wrote: "Crossing the Beauce by car. I pass through unsuspected corners. I pass through villages where everything - houses, walls - is the color of the earth, built with earth. Earth and sky... An immense sky that comes down to earth level, all at once".
