With Dufy, form and color never coincide exactly, giving his works an immediately recognizable character. Raoul Dufy explains his use of this technique by a visual phenomenon that struck him when he saw a little girl in red running along the port of Le Havre. The colored impression produced by the dress persisted behind the moving outline of the girl. Thus, "form-movement" and "light-color" could very well not be superimposed on paper (cf.Raoul-Dufy.org). In "Les courses d'Epsom", the brushwork is both synthetic and descriptive. The atmosphere of the racecourse is radically rendered by an abundance of details and signs: the architecture of the grandstands, the alignment of the tents, the commas of the public, the scoreboard and polychrome advertising inserts, but also, in the foreground, the elegant silhouettes of the horse owners in their top hats. Dufy gives us an image of the Epsom racecourse, the temple of the English "flat", and by placing a single horse on it, an image of cheerful atmosphere and vitality. TEMPORARY IMPORT LOT
