The work is illustrated with a frontispiece map and numerous in-text illustrations. Between 1862 and 1945, the French state aimed to spread the French language and culture throughout the Indochinese peninsula through education; Les Cinq fleurs was one of the reference textbooks of the period, modeled on Tour de la France par deux enfants.
