JACQUEMONT (Victor). Correspondance de Victor Jacquemont ave - Lot 110
JACQUEMONT (Victor). Correspondance de Victor Jacquemont avec sa famille et plusieurs de ses amis, pendant son voyage dans l'Inde (1828-1832). Paris, H. Fournier aîné, 1841. 2 vol. in-12, (4)-370 p., 1 folding map + 372 p., contemporary green half-chagrin, spine ribbed (flaws including split and reattached jaws, one head cap torn off, freckles). New edition, partly original, enlarged with previously unpublished letters. This posthumous correspondence is the first modern description of India. Physician Victor Jacquemont (1801-1832) was entrusted by the Muséum with a mission of naturalistic exploration in the Indian subcontinent, where he stayed from 1829 until his death in 1832. "Few expeditions have produced such great results and enriched our Museum with such varied collections. Geology, geography and meteorology owe him no less than botany and natural history. At the same time, the author has studied the customs, institutions, languages, trade, natural and industrial productions of the immense regions he has traversed" (Chadenat). Illustrated with a large fold-out map of India (48 x 56 cm).
