First edition of the French translation by the Dutch diplomat Abraham de Wicquefort. Thomas Herbert (1606-1682) was part of the English embassy led by Sir Dodmore Cotton and sent by Charles I to Persia, to the court of Shah Abbas I. His journey took him to Madagascar, Goa, Surat, Isfahan, Baghdad and the Moluccas. The account of the author's diplomatic journey is followed by Jeremias van Vliet's historical account of the death of the King of Siam in 1647 (pp. 569-632). A sample of the Malacca language appears on pages 511-514. The most complete work on Persia in the 17th century, considered one of the best on the subject.
