(catalog ed.), index, 8 hors-texte maps, publisher's illustrated brown chagrin on upper board, gilt title on spine (flaws including worn lower jaw, dull corners, inner hinge split). First edition illustrated with numerous black engravings in the text and 8 maps, 7 of them folding in color, and a black frontispiece. The engineer Holt Samuel Hallett (1841-1911) describes his travels in Burma, Siam and the Shan States in 1877 in search of the best way to link Burma to China and Siam by rail, partly by boat and partly by elephant.
