[GONZALES SAN PEDRO (Francesco). Abridged Relation of the new persecution in China; taken from the Relation composed in Macao by the missionaries of the order of Saint Dominic, who were expelled from that mission. Translated from the Italian. No place, no date (1712). 2 parts in 1 vol. in-12, (6)-378-48-(11) p., contemporary marbled havana basane, ornate ribbed spine, red edges (snags to head cap, worm damage to tail of spine ends, gilt redone on spine). First edition. The author gives us here the Dominican voice in the great affair of the "Querelle des rites"; Superior of the order of Dominican missionaries in China, he describes the day-to-day movements of his mission, and rages against the Jesuits, whom he accuses of favoring Chinese rites in order to establish their authority. (Cordier, 916).
