Norbert capucin. Venice [i.e. Neuchâtel], the Barzotti brothers, 1746. Small In-4, VIII-379 p., 19th c. half blond basane, smooth spine decorated, black title page (worm damage to spine, corners dulled, a few rare browned pages). Rare first edition, printed under a false Venetian address in Neuchâtel, blacklisted by the bishop of Lausanne Joseph-Hubert de Boccard, then burned in a public square in Fribourg by government order in March 1746. Parodying the title of the Jesuits' relations, the work was an indictment of the missionaries, and the Jesuits in particular, for being too tolerant of certain pagan rites practiced by local Christians, launched by the priest Pierre-François Favre (1706-1795), who had accompanied Bishop d'Halicarnasse (Elzéar-François de La Baume des Achards) on his apostolic visit to the missions of Annam, Cochinchina and Cambodia, between 1738 and 1742. Provenance: Gustave Momy, schoolteacher in Dosches (repeated stamp); handwritten bookplate dated 1952 with red oriental stamp. (Cordier, Indosinica, 1931().
