DUTREUIL DE RHINS (Jules-Léon). Central Asia (Thibet and adj - Lot 64
DUTREUIL DE RHINS (Jules-Léon). Central Asia (Thibet and adjacent regions). Text and Atlas. Paris, Leroux, 1889. In-4, XVI-620 p., 1 hors-texte map, paperback (spine broken, rare foxing) + Atlas in-plano of 14 folding lithographed leaves in publisher's wallet, green half cloth, laces (wallet faded). First edition preceded by an extensive geographical and general bibliography and followed by a transcription table of geographical expressions in eleven languages; geographical index in fine. The atlas comprises 14 sheets (the first two in color) with 25 numbered maps. After this unique and important publication, the geographer, cartographer and explorer Jules-Léon Dutreuil de Rhins (1846-1894) organized an exploratory mission to Upper Asia in 1891, during which he was murdered. His reports were a milestone in Western knowledge of the regions he traversed. (Cordier, Sinica supplement, 2087).
