In-8, (12)-XXXVI-575 p., contemporary tan speckled calf, spine ribbed, red title page, mottled edges (stains to boards, corners worn).
First edition. Louis Ellies du Pin or Dupin (1657-1719), Doctor of Theology at the Faculty of Paris and Royal Professor of Philosophy, was one of the first to engage the Faculty to rule on "the religion of the Chinese", and to take part in the famous "querelle des rites", born of the confrontation between supporters of adapting the teaching of religion to local customs and usages, and advocates of the sole transmission of orthodox Christianity with a universal vocation. The controversy lasted almost a century and divided the missionary orders.
