APRES DE MANNEVILLETTE (Jean-Baptiste-Nicolas-Denis d'). Instructions sur la navigation des Indes Orientales et de la Chine, pour servir au Neptune Oriental, dedie au Roi. Paris, Demonville, Brest, Malassis, 1775. In-folio, (4)-LVIII-XV-(1)-574-(14) p., modern ivory half-velin, smooth spine, handwritten title in red and black, red edges (browning and stains to title, first and last leaves and lighter in middle of vol.; title rebacked). First edition. A complement to the famous "routier" of the Neptune oriental (1745-1775), this work brings together the observations of Mannevillette (1707-1780), captain of the Compagnie des Indes orientales, hydrographer and renowned cartographer on various coastal and open-sea routes from the Cape of Good Hope and the Indian Ocean to the China Sea. He was the first French navigator to use the octant, which enabled him to renew coastal cartography. Double-bound preface and table at end. (Polak 130).
