[Atlas]. [China]. ANVILLE (Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d'). No - Lot 3
[Atlas]. [China]. ANVILLE (Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d'). La Haye, by Henri Scheuleer, 1737. Large folio, 12 p., 42 maps mounted on tabs, old modest halfvelin, muted spine, marbled boards (snag at head of spine, boards worn; wetness in margins of text and on corners of 2 maps, some soiling in margins). Atlas comprising 42 copper-engraved maps: one fold-out, 11 double-page and 30 full-page. It includes 5 general maps, the others specific to China (15 maps), Tartary (12) and Tibet (9). The last map shows the route of Vitus Bering's expedition from Tobolsk to Kamchatka. Newly engraved, the maps reproduce, with minor variations, those given by d'Anville for the original edition of Père Du Halde's Description de la Chine published in 1735. The text includes a contribution that did not appear in Père Du Halde's work, Relation de la Boucharie "par un officier suédois qui a fait quelque séjour dans ce pays". (Cordier, Bibl. sinica, 48).
