A silver-gilt mounted ruby glass bottle - Lot 43
A silver-gilt mounted ruby glass bottle A silver-gilt mounted ruby glass bottle Glass and mounting (unmarked) : South Germany, circa 1700 H. 28.5 cm; wt 587 g. Provenance: Dorotheum sale, Vienna, October 25, 2018, lot 1211 ; Galerie Kovacek, Vienna; Private collection, France. Comparative bibliography: D. von Kerssenbrock-Krosigk, Rubinglas des ausgehenden 17. und des 18. Jahrhunderts, Mainz, 2001. T. Schroder, Renaissance and Baroque Silver, Mounted Porcelain and Ruby Glass from the Zilkha Collection, London, 2012. The flattened pear-shaped bottle in ruby glass is ribbed on the body. Its gilded silver mounting consists of a contoured pedestal, a removable serrated ring around the neck, and a serrated ring at the neck where the domed stopper is inserted. The latter is engraved with a flower with amatized petals and topped by a fixed oval ring. A chain links this ring to the removable collar ring. Number painted in yellow under the foot: 14.308; finely engraved on the neck: 3014 (?). Condition: good This bottle shape is typical of ruby glass production in southern Germany in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Several others are known, such as those in the Green Vault in Dresden, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen, the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, etc. (cf. von Kerssenbrock-Krosigk, pp. 228-232, pl. 9 and 11), or those in the Zilkha collection (cf. Schroder, no. 96-98; Christie's, New York, Global Treasury: The Life and Collection of Selim & Mary Zilkha, February 6, 2025, lots 117, 128, 133). What sets ours apart is its smooth neck, where the other bottles are ribbed, as on the belly.
