Hallmarks: N: Nuremberg 1609-1629 (ibid., vol. I, no. BZ13). LT: Lorenz Tittecke (Teppe, Timann et al, vol. I, n°MZ892). The covered gilded silver bowl features repoussé decoration of protruding cupules framed by a decoration, on an amatized ground, of stemmed flowers, trophies and vases of fruit, scrolls and small shells. The baluster shaft is adorned with pearl drops topped with small cupules and three brackets applied around a molded neck. The circular pedestal features a gadrooned doucine on an amati ground beneath a plain throat and a bulge lined with protruding cupules. The domed lid, echoing the protruding cupules, is bordered by a cut-out frieze alternating channels and stings. In the center, on a plain terrace, stands the handle formed of three leafy consoles decorating the narrowing topped by a small gadrooned dome serving as the base for the bouquet of cut-out, coiled silver flowers. Under the lid, in the center, is an oval eglomized glass medallion bearing the coat of arms of the Bishop of Bamberg, Johann Gottfried von Aschhausen. The medallion bears the initials I[ohann] G[ottfried] E[pisc.] B[amberg] and the date 1615. Condition: good This bowl is mentioned by Marc Rosenberg in his reference work on silversmiths (cf. Rosenberg, vol. III, no. 4142 b). A very similar bowl, also by Lorenz Tittecke1 , is in the Landesmuseum Joanneum, Graz (cf. K. Teppe, U. Timann et al, vol. II, ill. 369). Johann Gottfried von Aschhausen (born August 12, 1575 in Oberlauda, died December 29, 1622 in Regensburg) was Prince-Bishop of Bamberg and Würzburg. In 1593, following the resignation of an older brother, he received the prebend in Bamberg, followed by Würzburg in 1596. In 1604, he received the deanery of Comburg Abbey. In an attempt to curb Protestantism, he called in the Jesuits and entrusted them with education in the bishopric. On his initiative, the Catholic League was reborn in 1609 under Maximilian of Bavaria, and from 1620 to 1622, during the Thirty Years' War, Bamberg and Würzburg fielded large infantry and cavalry regiments against the Reformed states and their allies. Despite Ernst von Mansfeld's threats to invade the bishoprics, Johann Gottfried von Aschhausen remained firm in his policy. During his episcopate, he also stepped up the witch-hunt, burning several hundred people at the stake. He died at the Diet of Regensburg and was buried in Bamberg Cathedral.
