[Hawaii]. [VANDERMAELEN (Philippe Marie), Sandwich Islands, Brussels, 1827.] 1 steel-engraved map, ca. 47 x 54 cm, colored outlines, no margins (very slight central crease). Rare map of Hawaii from the Atlas universel de géographie by Belgian cartographer Vandermaelen, offering the largest representation of the island ever seen in a commercial atlas. It is the only representation of Hawaii on a separate map within fifty years of its discovery. The map shows Cook's routes through the islands and introduces the first place names; it is accompanied by a text in French describing the physical appearance of the natives, their clothing and ornaments, and commenting on the physical appearance of the women, whose excessively loose morals are highlighted.
