[Americana]. ROBERT DE VAUGONDY (Didier). Amérique septentri - Lot 262
[Americana]. ROBERT DE VAUGONDY (Didier). Amérique septentrionale dressée sur les relations plus modernes des voyageurs et navigateurs. Paris, Robert de Vaugondy, 1783. 1 copper-engraved map, 55 x 75 cm. (sheet) (wetness in inner margin slightly affecting map).
Vaugondy's important map of North America, the second edition of which mentions the United States for the first time.
It extends from Baffin Bay in the north to parts of South America, and from the Pacific Ocean in the west to the Azores Islands in the east. It includes a small map detailing northwest America in the upper left-hand corner. Based on the accounts of modern travelers, this map correctly represents California in its peninsular form. It mentions the United States and the states of Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, Carolina, Pennsylvania and New York.....
The first state of this map was published in 1750, the present later copy mentions the newly established United States. It was corrected after the 1783 Treaty of Paris, signed on September 3 between American and British representatives. This agreement put an end to the American Revolutionary War, recognized the independence of the United States and granted it important territories in the West.
