[Americana]. [Mexico]. NEVE Y MOLINA (Luis de). Reglas de or - Lot 257
[Americana]. [Mexico]. NEVE Y MOLINA (Luis de). Reglas de orthographia, y arte del idioma Othomi breve instrucción para los participantes Mexico City, Imprenta de la Bibliotheca Mexicana, 1767. In-8, [12] f., 160 p., [1] f. engraved, period soft ivory parchment, smooth spine, modern handwritten title and author throughout, traces of laces (soiling, small lack affecting qq. letter at corner of p. 68, small stain in margin of first 60 pages, front. lacking). Rare first edition of the first grammar of the Otomí language. The Otomi language is structurally distinct from the other languages spoken in Mexico, bearing a closer resemblance to the languages of East Asia than to any other. The author was the first to establish a true character system, which has since been preserved. The copy contains the errata leaf between pages 12 and 13, engraved on copperplate by B.J.F. Gomez, dated 1768 and bearing a different address (its frame slightly trimmed on the right). Without the frontispiece with the effigy of St. Joseph, which is almost always missing and not mentioned by Sabin. (Sabin, 52413).
