[Near East]. VAN DE VELDE (Charles William Meredith). Karte von Palästina... Deutche Ausgabe nach der zweiten auflage der "Map of the Holy Land . Gotha, Germany, Justus Perthes, 1866. 1 lithographed map on 8 sheets, mounted on canvas, red canvas border, 135 x 88 cm. A rare 19th-century map of Palestine and Jerusalem by Dutch cartographer William Meredith van de Velde, a rare and detailed document depicting the region under Ottoman rule. It covers Palestine, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan, depicting major cities, mountains and rivers, as well as Ottoman administrative divisions and major travel routes, such as the road from Beirut to Damascus. The map is distinguished by its use of scientific data, replacing traditional biblical sources, and by the inclusion of place names in romanized Arabic, a rarity at the time. It is based on Van de Velde's surveys carried out during his trip to the Holy Land between 1851 and 1852, and was first published in 1858. This map marked a turning point in the cartography of the region, incorporating accurate and modern features for its time. It was republished in German in 1866 and is today an important geographical document. A scholarly study of this map can be found in Mapping the Holy Land (2017).
