[Iceland]. CAROLUS (Joris); HONDIUS (Jodocus); JANSSON (Jan) - Lot 147
[Iceland]. CAROLUS (Joris); HONDIUS (Jodocus); JANSSON (Jan), editor. Tabula Islandiae Auctore Georgio Carolo Flandro. [Amsterdam, 1630 ?] 1 copper-engraved map, approx. 38 x 49 cm, cut to frame, increased by one margin to 44 x 55 cm, colored (cartouche and folds restored). This particularly influential 17th-century map offers a decorative representation of Iceland, featuring sea monsters, sailing ships, compass roses, an erupting volcano and majestic mountains. It is attributed to Joris Carolus (c. 1566 - c. 1636), a Dutch cartographer and navigator working for the Dutch East India Company. The aim of this map was to develop or eventually replace the previous map of Iceland, designed by Gerard Mercator. Initially published in 1630 in the "Atlas Maioris" by Jodocus Hondius and Jan Jansson, it was subsequently incorporated into various editions of this atlas, in several languages. A later version bears the imprint of Hondius. In 1640, a reprint was made by Blaeu using the same original copper plates. (Van der Krogt, I, [1250:1:B.1]; CONWAY, M. (1901). Joris Carolus, Discoverer of Edge Island. The Geographical Journal, 17(6), 623-632).
