[Iceland]. HONDIUS (Jodocus II), JANSSON (Jan). Tabula Islan - Lot 146
[Iceland]. HONDIUS (Jodocus II), JANSSON (Jan). Tabula Islandiae Auctore Georgio Carolo Flandro. Amsterdam, ca. 1630. 1 copper-engraved map, 38 x 49 cm. on sheet approx. 44 x 54 cm. hand-colored (restored).
Decorative 17th-century map of Iceland, by Hondius and attributed to Joris Carolus, decorated with sea monsters, sailing ships, compass roses and an erupting volcano, and a handsome title cartouche.
The present copy appears to be the first state of this map as described by Van der Krogt, without the Hondius address on the title cartouche and a text on the verso of the page. It was intended to elaborate, and eventually replace, Gerard Mercator's earlier map of Iceland. The map appeared in the appendix of the Atlas Maioris published by Jodocus Hondius and Jan Jansson in 1630, and was subsequently included in the German, Dutch, English, French and Spanish editions of this atlas. A later state was published with Hondius's address.
(Van der Krogt, I, [1250:1:B.1]).
