[Italy]. WALDSEEMULLER (Martin). Tabula Europ. Sexta Italiae - Lot 145
[Italy]. WALDSEEMULLER (Martin). Tabula Europ. Sexta Italiae. [Strasbourg], [1513]. 1 woodcut map, 37 x 55 cm, on sheet approx. 43 x 63 cm, partly colored, (restorations of 2 wormholes in margin, of a corner in margin and of the central fold; 2 diamond-shaped parts in the center of each half-sheet skillfully restored, 2 discreet wormholes).
Superb and rare map of Italy and Corsica by Waldseemüller, in antique colors. It is one of the earliest maps of this region, with the names of the towns inscribed in Latin. It is part of the 1513 edition of Ptolemy's Geography, the most important according to Stevens, considered to be the first modern atlas (World encompassed n°56), in which for the first time contemporary maps are placed alongside those of Ptolemy, offering an easy comparison between old and new maps. To Ptolemy's 27 maps are added the 20 maps by Martin Waldseemüller.
Early handwritten entry at v°: Ego Johannes Anerophilus .
(Pastoureau, p.371; Phillips Atlases 359).
