[Manuscript]. [Italy, Florence]. Stay in Florence, September - Lot 140
[Manuscript]. [Italy, Florence]. Stay in Florence, September 1878 to April 1879. Pisa, Siena, Venice [May 1879]. Fort in-8, contemporary havana half-maroquin with corners, spine ribbed, gilt title. Important manuscript, in ink on paper, neat and legible, consisting of 830 pages and illustrated with nearly 250 photographic prints, postcards and documents; most of the photographs are from the publishers Brogi or Alinari. Unpublished account of a Parisian family's stay in Florence and subsequent journey to Pisa, Siena and Venice. The couple were accompanied by their son, a painter, and all took a keen interest in art; they made a trip of this kind every year, giving them the opportunity to indulge their aesthetic passions. Numerous works of art are described throughout the narrative, and a table of the artists mentioned appears at the end of the volume. Equally concerned with describing the places they visited, and the habits and customs of both locals and tourists, the editors' narrative is a pleasure to read, and at times not lacking in piquancy. In addition to the museums they visit regularly, our travelers also attend shows and concerts, which provide them with the opportunity for encounters that they document. The story as a whole offers an original description of the artistic wealth and daily life in Florence and Venice at the end of the 19th century.
