[Manuscript]. [Italy]. [PIEMONT, TURIN, RAPALLO, PORTOFINO ] - Lot 138
[Manuscript]. [Italy]. [PIEMONT, TURIN, RAPALLO, PORTOFINO ]. [s.l.], [late 18th century)]. 11 handwritten maps on tracing, black and red ink, wash and watercolor, (craquelures, some missing, splits, browned leaves).
Important set of 11 handwritten maps on tracing paper, illustrating various regions of Italy, mainly Piedmont, the area around Turin, the province of Lunigiana, and the Ligurian coast from Genoa to Savona. In particular, they detail the Rapallo-Portofino gulfs and the coasts between Nervi and Moneglia. The maps vary in size, the largest measuring around 91 x 131 cm. and the smallest around 56 x 66 cm.
The maps are drawn in red and black ink, show the hydrographic network and main roads, and include a large number of place names. One sheet covers the area around the Gulf of La Spezia and bears the date 1724; another, very large, bears the date 1736 and represents part of Tuscany. The dates are probably those of the models.
Three sheets are of a different, more meticulous style, with watercolor washes highlighting the reliefs; they are dedicated to the Mediterranean coast, around Genoa.
Each tracing sheet is laminated onto a large sheet of watermarked laid paper; on the reverse are old handwritten titles and a note reading "Bureau de la Marine tracing".
A total of 11 sheets.
