[Corsica]. MONDHARE (Louis-Joseph). Nouvelle carte de l'Isle - Lot 78
[Corsica]. MONDHARE (Louis-Joseph). Nouvelle carte de l'Isle de Corse. Paris, Mondhare, 1769. 1 copper-engraved map, 48 x 66 cm. (sheet), colored outlines (tiny missing central fold, crack in upper margin restored).
First map of Corsica published after the French conquest.
This large, decorative map shows Corsica facing west. It is divided into jurisdictions, which in turn are divided into pieves or administrative divisions.
The map was published in 1769, the year of the Battle of Ponte-Novo, the end of the confrontation between Pascal Paoli's troops and the armies of French King Louis XV. Opening the road to Corte, capital of the Corsican Republic, to the French grenadiers, this battle marked the end of the second and final phase of the French conquest of Corsica.
