[France]. ASSELINEAU. France. Churches and cathedrals. Paris - Lot 57

[France]. ASSELINEAU. France. Churches and cathedrals. Paris. F. Sinnett. [ca. 1853-1876]. Oblong folio (ca. 31 x 41 cm.), 24 plates, period red half-basane, smooth muted spine, gilt title on upper board, gilt and cold framing (rubbed, spine split at tail, foxing). Suite of 24 plates illustrating the churches and cathedrals of numerous French cities, including Saint-Jacques Church in Dieppe, Saint-Bénigne Cathedral and Saint-Michel Church in Dijon, Notre-Dame in Paris, and the cathedrals of Strasbourg, Nantes, Rennes and Châlons. All printed in color, almost all by Destouches, after drawings by Asselineau (21) and Chapuy (2), lithographed by Asselineau, and Lebreton (1) lithographed by himself. These plates most probably appeared in Charles Mercereau's La France de nos jours, a series of 475 lithographs published in numerous issues between 1853 and 1876. Collectors or booksellers often grouped the plates together by artist, region or theme.
