Olivier DEBRE (1920 - 1999) [FRANCE] - Lot 52
Olivier DEBRE (1920 - 1999) [FRANCE] Pink Mountain, Lærdal (Norway),1993 Oil on canvas. Signed, dated and titled on the back of the canvas. 100 x 120 cm Provenance : Françoise Tournié Collection By descent to the current owner Cette oeuvre est répertoriée dans les archives Debré Our painting, like others from 1971 onwards, was inspired by stays in Norway in the county of Westland: the sense of immensity of the mountainous nature of the fjords is modulated and sometimes dissolved by the diaphanous colors of the northern light. The color pink and its emotional power in its many varieties and shades (on the banks of the Loire, in harbors, in nature in general), is decisive for the painter throughout his work. The evolution of Olivier Debré's work towards abstraction in the 1950s was notably guided by his research into the sign that embodies emotion and thought. In the 1960s, this reflection was extended to landscapes. Debré, who wanted to "do an abstract Courbet", continued his search for the absolute pictorial language to symbolize emotions in these "landscape-signs". For the artist, who himself describes his painting as fervent abstraction, "What's important is the intensity of the feeling, not the subject, even if it's the very description of the emotion".
