Renoir and Cézanne had already worked together in 1881, facing the bay of l'Estaque. In February 1888, Renoir was invited by Cézanne to stay at his Jas de Bouffan farmhouse in Aix-en-Provence. But the Renoir family soon escaped "because of the black avarice that reigned in the house". Cézanne himself painted very little of the town of Aix-en-Provence, although there is a watercolor of La fontaine de la place de l'Hôtel de ville (Henry and Rose Pearlman Collection, Princeton University Art Museum , Fig 1). Disturbingly, Renoir himself executed a sketch in front of one of the town's fountains. It's probably the Augustins fountain, or perhaps the Hôtel de Ville fountain, both topped by a Corinthian column. In our charming sketch, we can admire Renoir's rich tones of pure color, the virgule touches characteristic of Impressionism and the play of light in the fountain's silvery water.
