Ernest CHAPLET (1835-1909) & Edouard DAMMOUSE (1850-1903 - Lot 11
Ernest CHAPLET (1835-1909) & Edouard DAMMOUSE (1850-1903) for Haviland & Cie Large naturalist vase in stoneware incised and enameled in polychrome, decorated with a hunting scene in a plant frame. Centered rosary stamp signature "H & C°" and monogrammed "ED" on the decoration. Circa 1882-1885 Height: 45 cm Bibliography: A whole series of vases from this short production period from 1882 to 1885 are reproduced from pages 25 to 35 of Jean d'Albis's book, Ernest Chaplet un céramiste art nouveau, Les Presses de la Connaissance, Paris, 1976. Note: The Dammouse brothers' Japanese-style decorations are inspired by the way the Japanese arrange the decoration on the form: on such an inro, for example, the body of an animal wraps around the piece. This concept was adopted by the Dammouses. Sometimes they use relief: while some leaves are flat, others are detached from the wall. In this way, obligatory reliefs such as the handle, for example, become part of the decoration, the branch whose leaves spread out over the body.
