Paris, Delespine, 1730. 8 vol. in-12, period fawn glazed calf, 5-rib spine, gilt title and tomaisons, decorated caissons with gilt arms, red edges (wear defects including rubbed headcaps, spidermooring). First edition. An account of Jean-Baptiste Labat's travels in Spain (Cadiz and Seville) and Italy (Genoa, Bologna, Tivoli, Cicita-Vecchia, Naples, the small central Italian Republic of San Marino, etc.) between 1705 and 1716, after having spent ten years in the West Indies. He spent several months in Cadiz and Andalusia, recruiting fathers for the missions. His superiors then called him to Bologna to report on his mission, and kept him in Rome until 1709 and in Civita-Vecchia until 1716. Volume 1 contains a chapter on the Philippine missions. The others relate his visits to Italy: monuments, paintings, libraries, cabinets of curiosities and antiques, etc. The work is illustrated with 5 plates, 4 of which are fold-outs. Provenance: coat of arms of Charles de Rohan, Prince de Soubise (OHR, pl. 2034, irons no. 6 and 7). (Brunet III, p. 707).
