French physician and naturalist Joseph Paul Gaimard (1793-1858) took part in several round-the-world voyages, the first as surgeon on Freycinet's Uranie (1817-1820), the next as physician and naturalist on Dumont d'Urville's Astrolabe (1826-1829). Appointed President of the Scientific Commission of Iceland and Greenland in 1829, he led four successive summer campaigns in this region (1835, 1836, 1838 and 1839) in the company of scientists and artists. In addition to the expedition's scientific objectives, Gaimard was tasked with searching for the geographer Jules de Blosseville and his crew, who disappeared aboard La Lilloise off the coast of Greenland in 1833.
