[Binding with coat of arms]. COPPIN (J.). Relation des voyag - Lot 35
[Binding with coat of arms]. COPPIN (J.). Relation des voyages faits dans la Turquie, la Thebaïde, et la Barbarie. Contenant des avis politiques. A Lyon, chez les Frères Bruyset, 1720. In-4, [3] f., 496 p., [3] f. (table), pl., contemporary brown basane, 5-nerved spine, red title page, gilt arms in center of each board, red edges, spine renewed (3 corners worn, nerves rubbed, light foxing, tear not missing p. 141). A French officer born around 1616, J. Coppin traveled to Egypt and Syria between 1638 and 1647; on his return, having become a religious of an eremitical order in the diocese of Le Puy, he published Le Bouclier de L'Europe (1686), both an account of his travels and a harangue in favor of a new crusade against the Ottomans. This second and final edition is presented by the publisher under a rejuvenated title that emphasizes the travels and descriptions of the regions visited. Like the first, it is illustrated with 4 plates showing troop movements. Provenance: "FV" (old monogrammed stamp on title); Georgetown College (old stamp on title and in margin p.1); Riggs Library Georgetown University, Washington DC (modern stamp on title, last f. and in margin p.143). The arms on the boards, similar to those of Lyon, could indicate a prize book from a local college.
