Curious and rare little vertical pocket sundial in the form - Lot 2
Curious and rare little vertical pocket sundial in the form of a cross engraved with the inscription CRVX / VICTORIA / LIS (Crux Victorialis: Ulrichkreuz or Ulrich's Cross) and, in two registers, 1 to 8 and 4 to 12, the upper arm adorned with a hinged piece indicating the months in two registers. Small folding axis style at the upper end of the left arm. Germany, Augsburg, circa 1700. Dimensions: 5.1 x 4.2cm. In a flattened walnut-shaped case. Ulrich Crosses are an Augsburg specialty. The small metal pilgrimage souvenirs have been distributed at St. Ulrich's grave for at least four centuries. Believers attributed the crosses' power to protecting them from the illnesses and dangers of everyday life. Ulrich crosses helped against lightning strikes, water obstacles and even rat epidemics. They were of great importance in people's lives. Whether as a christening gift, a rosary pendant, a beer mug lid, a sundial or a funeral offering, the little crosses were lifelong companions.
