Raymond Hains, born in 1926, first distinguished himself in photography. His singular art is made up of associations, polysemy and lyricism.
Joining the post-war "Nouveaux Réalistes" movement alongside Yves Klein, Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely, to name but a few, he appropriates reality to reveal its obvious beauty. An eternal lyricist, Hains never ceased to sublimate manufactured objects into works of art, and in the 1960s he experimented with new perspectives on reality.
The high point of this period was his giant bronze matchbox sculptures. This work on everyday objects echoes the gold "Match Pockets" Brooch-Pendant we are presenting at this sale. The originality of this brooch cannot be overstated, combining the innovative research of an emblematic period with the quality of detail of this artist's jewel.
