LECOMTE (Hippolyte) - Lot 249
LECOMTE (Hippolyte) Six aquatint panels depicting various scenes from Don Quixote: -Don Quixote riding the wooden horse Clavileno into space -Sancho enthroned on a barrel in the inn Meeting Dulcinea and her ladies-in-waiting -Don Quixote is brought back to his village, weary and weighed down on a hay wagon pulled by two oxen. After an eventful night, Don Quixote escapes from the inn through a window, where he remains suspended in mid-air. -A famous episode in which, towards the end of the novel, Don Quixote triumphs over the Knight of the Mirrors. These unsigned aquatints are unknown to Professor Leanaghan. They are carefully framed around 1900 with elaborate baguettes. A few accidents and two panes are missing. They were produced around 1838 by lithographer Hippolyte Lecomte (1781-1857), a pupil of Jean-Baptiste Regnault and husband of a daughter of Carle Vernet.
