MONTEMAIOR (Jorge de) LA DIANA, nuevamente corregida y revista por Alonso de VULLOA...
Jo. Comenzini, En Venecia, 1574.
Two parts in one in-12 volume (2ff, 215 pp // 224 fol) full contemporary creased vellum, copy a little handled.
Probably the second edition with the following additions: los verdaderos amores del Abencerraje; la hermosa Xarifa; la historia de Alcida y Silvano; de Pirame y Tisbe; las damas Aragonesas, Catalanas, Valencianas y Castellanas.
Unlike Torquemada, Montemayor's work is spared in chapter VI of D.Q., on condition that the numerous verse passages are removed and only the prose retained.
This pastoral novel in praise of both spiritual and sensual love is a series of short stories about the painful and thwarted love affairs of shepherds and shepherdesses. Neoplatonism blends here with the love tradition of the trouvères' lyric poetry. (Cf Laffont-Bompiani).
These "bergeries" were an immediate success, and influenced the Astrée, which became the model for all 17th-century sentimental novels.
Palau, 177951; Brunet, III, 1851; Salva, 1910.
