ROJAS (Fernando de)]. LA CELESTINE. Tragi-Comédie de Calixte - Lot 243
ROJAS (Fernando de)]. LA CELESTINE. Tragi-Comédie de Calixte et Mélibée, translated from Spanish, annotated and preceded by an historical essay by Germond de Lavigne.
Paris, Charles Gosselin, 1841.
Small in-12, midnight-blue half calf with corners, finely decorated spine (19th-century binding, signed Lebrun).
A drama, novel and satire in one, La Célestine was almost as popular as Le Quichotte. It was published in nearly fifty editions between 1499 and 1633, and numerous translations were made, including this one. Full of scabrous details, its subject is akin to Goethe's Faust. Mélibée, similar to Marguerite, embodies the defenseless young virgin destined for the throes of passion and suffering.
Palau, 52210: esta moderna y buena traduccion se reimprimo.
[Enclosed] same translation by A. Lemerre, 1873.
[Enclosed] same translation by Marpon Flammarion n.d.
It should be remembered that there were no editions in France between 1644 and 1841, i.e. almost two centuries!
(Enclosed). [DELGADO (Jacinto Maria) & JARA Y SANCHEZ DE MOLINA (Juan Francisco de la)]. ADICIONES a la Historia del Ingenioso Hidalgo DON QUIJOTE DE LA MANCHA continuacion de la vida DE SANCHO PANZA.
Madid, Mellado editor, 1845.
One volume, small in-8° (216 pp) full brown basane, smooth spine decorated (19th century binding). A heavily dampened copy, with traces of mould on the last pages.
The first edition, published in 1786, is said to be by Delgado; this edition appears to be in two states, with two title variants. Palau describes them as no. 2767 (ours) and 123076.
Both in 216 pp and illustrated with woodcuts by Oliveros.
