QUEVEDO Y VILLEGAS (Francisco Gomez de) Knight of the Order - Lot 229

QUEVEDO Y VILLEGAS (Francisco Gomez de) Knight of the Order of S. Jaques. Jaques. LES VISIONS. ... augmentées de l'Enfer Réformé, ou Sédition Infernale. Lyon, Pierre Bailly, 1638. An in-12 volume in contemporary full parchment. Binding a little rubbed and handled. New edition of Sieur de la Geneste's translation, first published in 1627; not mentioned by Palau. These six visions: the demonic algouazil, death, hell etc... ARE satirical fictions with moralizing tendencies. Quevedo composed them in 1606 and, like Cervantes, dedicated them to the Count of Lemos. This satire is no mere caricature, but a genuine creation with a singular and strange accent. These six satirical Visions and his picaresque novel "Don Pablo de Segovia" are part of a Baroque aesthetic. [another edition] Quevedo Villegas; Les Visions translated by Sieur de La Geneste. Rouen, s. d. (1700), Palau 244144.
