PERSONAL WORK BY JEAN CASSOU. - Lot 179

PERSONAL WORK BY JEAN CASSOU. [CERVANTES]. DON QUICHOTTE. Paris, Jeanne Castel, [1951] One folio volume in leaves in slipcase (vii pp-18 leaves and 20 etchings). One of five copies on Japon (N°2) with an original drawing, a suite of variants, a suite of states on chine and a copperplate by Ladislas Jahl. A copy dedicated by the artist to Jean Cassou, who wrote the preface. A very fine illustration, perfectly suggesting Don Quixote's deleterious atmosphere. Jahl, painter and engraver, was born on August 10, 1886, and belonged to the Polish school. In 1946, the French state acquired "Les Chevaux Légers Polonais" for the Elysée Palace. Here too, the author's name has disappeared; the hero has become a myth.
