PREVIOUSLY UNPUBLISHED ILLUSTRATIONS FROM LOUIS ICART'S QUIX - Lot 175
PREVIOUSLY UNPUBLISHED ILLUSTRATIONS FROM LOUIS ICART'S QUIXOTE
[ICART (Louis)]. DON QUICHOTTE DE LA MANCHE. Comédie héroïque en cinq actes, en vers.
[Paris], [Louis Icart], 1933.
Manuscript in-4° (145 ff including 6 blanks), full tan morocco, boards and spine excessively decorated with gilt coats of arms, foliage and lace (flamboyant pastiche of an 18th-century binding).
Original manuscript dated November 25, 1933 and signed by Louis Icart.
The text was published in 1934 and 1938 and first performed at the Théâtre du Casino Municipal in Nice on April 23, 1938.
The illustrations signed by the artist (16 full-page color washes, 55 mid-page watercolors and ten pencil drawings) are unpublished, with the exception of the fourteenth (Don Quixote, under a sky of military aircraft, exclaiming "Ce sont elles, toutes les ailes retrouvées... de mes moulins") which served as the cover for the original edition.
An exceptional piece, with the 1938 second edition enriched by a fine letter signed by Louis Icart: "En hommage cordial à Gaston Baheux qui aime les peintres et les poètes, ce poème écrit par un peintre" (In cordial homage to Gaston Baheux, who loves painters and poets, this poem written by a painter).
