PALET (Joan). DICCIONARIO muy copioso de la lengua Española y Françesa. En el qual son declaradas todas las palabras Castellanas y françesas, con sus proprias y naturales significaciones sacadas de muchos y muy excelentes Autores antiguos y modernos. DICTIONNAIRE TRES AMPLE DE LA LANGUE Espagnole et française [bound with) LE DICTIONNAIRE TRES AMPLE DE LA LANGUE FRANCAISE ET ESPAGNOLE... Brussels, Rutger Velpius, 1606-1607. A large in-8 volume (208 pp and 153 pp uncounted), full period parchment over boards. A slightly soiled copy. Second edition (1st dated 1604) published by Velpius (one of the very first publishers of Le Quichotte in 1607 and 1611). Jean Palet was physician to the young Prince de Condé, Henri de Bourbon. The publication of his bilingual dictionary in 1604 was a first. Intended for the young prince's education, it underlined the fact that Spanish was in vogue, and that the destinies of Spain, France and the Netherlands were increasingly intertwined. Not only is this dictionary (along with those of Covarrubias Orozco in 1611 and César Oudin in 1607) invaluable for understanding classical texts, but it also enabled the first translators of Cervantes (Rosset, Vital d'Audiguier, G. Chappuys) and the various picaresque novels to make them known to the French public. Spanish was very much in vogue at the time, and Spanish authors were very successful both in translation and in bilingual editions. Palau, 210184. Period handwritten bookplate on title leaf: Aug. Lobauÿ (?). Bookplate of Me Tellier, lawyer.
