ILLUSTRATION ANCIENNE INCONNUE! - Lot 133

ILLUSTRATION ANCIENNE INCONNUE! TEN GOUACHE WATERCOLORS. THE MAIN ADVENTURES OF DON QUIXOTE. France ? Unpublished, [1800?] Series of ten unpublished watercolors in small oblong in-4° format, framed with gold baguettes. They measure 30 cm x 23 cm. These original works, in the spirit of Natoire but more naive, could be essays for tapestry cartoons that apparently were never realized. Dr. Leanagan, curator of the Hispanic Society of America and a leading specialist in Quixote iconography, was unaware of this original suite, which is not mentioned anywhere. We have sent him the photos for possible publication. As with Coypel, the main and best-known adventures of Don Quixote are presented here.
