SIX PANELS IN BRODERY ON POLYCHROME SILK depicting various s - Lot 131
SIX PANELS IN BRODERY ON POLYCHROME SILK depicting various scenes from Don Quixote. Spain ? s. e. ca. 1740]. These six embroideries are in mahogany frames measuring 30 cm x 37 cm. They feature a cartouche with a handwritten inscription in Spanish on paper. Very good condition, despite some damage to the frames, including broken glass. These six scenes (probably out of 12) are unique and unknown to the specialist Dr. Leanaghan and to specialized bibliographies. They are based on copper engravings by Radigues (Paris, rue St Jacques), whose real name was Anton Jacoulévitch (November 7, 1721 - June 20, 1809), see catalog no. 130. The very naive drawing is inspired by Coypel, unsigned, but probably by Ricar: 1) - Book III, chap. XVI: Sancho is sent flying on a blanket. 2) - Book V, chap. XIV: Don Quixote confronts the cavalier del Bosque and recognizes, after having thrown him off, the bachelor Samson Carrasco. 3) - Book VI, chap. XXVI: Don Quixote attacks the puppets. 4) - Book V, chap. X: Sancho's ruse to enchant Dulcinea. 5) - Part 2, chap. XXX: Don Quixote meets a beautiful huntress and sends Sancho to pay her a compliment. 6) - Part 2, chap. XLI: Malambrin sends a wooden horse named Clavileño on an imaginary journey through the sky. An exceptional, unclassified set. It seems unique!
