Modest and discreet Gracian published his works under the name of his brother Lorenzo.
His motto "En Nada Vulgar" ("In Nothing Vulgar") makes him a disciple of Gongora, a champion of preciosity and one of the exponents of "cultism". This is a far cry from the popular literature represented by Cervantes shortly before.
Brunet, II, 1687.
