QUEVEDO Y VILLEGAS (Francisco Gomez de). LAS TRES MUSAS ULTI - Lot 88
QUEVEDO Y VILLEGAS (Francisco Gomez de). LAS TRES MUSAS ULTIMAS CASTELLANAS. Segunda cumbre del Parnasso Español. Madrid, Imprenta Real, 1670. One small volume in-4, full stiff parchment overlay (pastiche made with a period binding). Pages a little foxed, accident with loss of a few letters on page 157, spotting in fine. Genuine first edition of this collection of Baroque texts in verse and prose. Posthumous publication by Pedro Aldrete, the author's nephew. The work is divided into three chapters dedicated to the muses Euterpe, Calliope and Uranie; it is illustrated with four allegorical figures representing Parnassus and the three daughters of Zeus, drawn by S. Moran and engraved on full-page copperplate by Marcos de Orozco. This volume is an indispensable complement to the Parnasso Español collection, published in 1648, which contains most of Quevedo's literary output. Palau, 244335: describes this very first edition, which includes the Parnassus plate, almost correctly (359 pp, not 358), but errs in reporting "otra tirada a plana y renglon del mismo año sin la lamina del Parnasso y con ligerisimas variantes en la portada. " In reality, this is a forgery with a completely recomposed text, albeit with the same number of pages (8 ff, 359 pp + 4 ff). This was the case for the J. C. Carrière copy sold at Drouot (no. 245) on December 4, 2013.
