LANCELOT. LES NOUVELLES drawn from the most famous Spanish authors
A Rouen, La veufve du Bosc, 1641.
One volume in-8 (8 ff, 471 pp. ), full contemporary limp vellum. A fine copy with Spanish notes in the margins of some leaves.
Second edition of the French translation of six Spanish short stories published in the early 17th century: Les Esclaves Illustres; Le Ravissement Heureux; L'Infidèle Confidente; La Dévote Hipocrite; L'Insolente Belle-mère; L'Hermaphrodite.
Lancelot translated them in 1628 from Gonzalo Cespedes y Menesses Historias Peregrinas y ejemplares, published in 1623.
Losada Goya no. 195 (Litt. Esp. en France au XVIIème siècle) : In his translation Lancelot has taken into account his readers' tastes as much as possible, not contenting himself with a literal translation, changing certain places, and adding various passages not found in the original.
He also took liberties with the names of the characters, Hellenizing them as he saw fit.
The 1st, 3rd and 6th stories are by Lugo y Davila (1622), and the second bears close resemblance to Camerino's El Casamiento astigado. So we see that Cervantes and his Nouvelles Exemplaires have flourished.
Palau, 130911.
