FIRST JUXTALINE TRANSLATION - Lot 79
FIRST JUXTALINE TRANSLATION [HURTADO DE MENDOZA (Diego)]. LA VIDA DEL LAZARILLO DE TORMES y de sus fortunas y adversidades. LA VIE DE LAZARILLO DE TORMES: Et de ses fortunes & adversitez. Paris, Adrian Tiffaine, 1616. Small volume in-12, purplish half morocco chagrin, smooth spine adorned with large gilded false nerves (19th century binding). Collation according to Palau, 133406: 239 pp. "Nouvelle traduction rapportée conférée [sic] avec l'Espagnol par M. P. B. P[arisien]." Very rare juxtaposition of this prototype of the picaresque novel. The original edition was published in Burgos in 1554. This is one of the earliest French translations of the first part alone, which seems to be based on Bonfons' 1601 translation (the first?). "The Lazarille is a replica in every respect of the pastoral novels of the Diane de Montemayor type. To the immanent order of love... he opposes the realism of natural appetite, the desire for the useful" (Laffont-Bompiani, Dict. des Œuvres).
